For Facts about Vitamins, Why Can't Parents Trust Big Pharmaceuticals?
When it comes to children nutrition facts about vitamins, it is difficult to know whom to trust because there is so much disagreement over the effectiveness of vitamins and supplements and because of corporate media censorship. Yes, it's true, censorship prevents parents from getting the whole truth regarding children nutrition facts about vitamins.
(I didn't believe media censorship existed until someone referred me to Sonoma State University web site called
Project Censored).
Focusing on the vitamin controversy, on one side there are traditional medical doctors and pharmaceutical companies defending patented medicines and attacking vitamins and supplements as proving ineffective and even dangerous. On the opposite side there are alternative physicians and vitamin companies, not only defending vitamins, but claiming vitamins are often superior than prescription medications for treating many diseases. What are the facts about vitamins?
From the stand point of children nutrition, since both sides are influenced by their respective financial interests involved, it is difficult to determine where the truth lies by simply relying on their word, particularly since there exist medical doctors in both camps. However the truth and credibility of their claims can be evaluated and this should help parents making decisions concerning children nutrition and the facts about vitamins.
Mainstream medicine and the major pharmaceutical companies have claimed vitamins are dangerous. While there appears to be agreement in both camps that certain vitamins can be dangerous, like iron, for example, it is with vitamin C where there, particularly, exists major disagreements. Hence, we will examine the safety of vitamins, in general, compared to patented medications and, also, examine the credibility of those involved in the vitamin C controversy in order to help us decide whom to believe from a children nutrition perspective on the facts about vitamins. Below, Dr. Philip Rudnick, Professor Emeritus, Chemistry, (http://www.thenhf.com/articles_27.htm)cites a five year study, excerpted from the "Journal of the American Medical Association" performed between 1993-1998. The findings were as follows:
Summary of Comparative Mortality of Drugs and Supplements/Herbs:
- Iatrogenic deaths from non-error adverse effects of
medication: ~ 106,000/year
- Deaths from herbs (weight-loss): ~37/year
- Deaths from supplements: 0-1/year
- Ratio of iatrogenic deaths from “properly” prescribed
drugs to deaths from herbs: 2865 ~ 2900/1
- Ratio of iatrogenic deaths from “properly” prescribed
drugs to deaths from supplements: =/> 106,000/1.
From a children’s nutrition perspective, it appears one is more than 106,000 times more likely to die from a correctly prescribed doctor's prescription than from taking a vitamin supplement, one of the very important facts about vitamins.
As a quick check on these findings, let's examine this
graph of the statistical comparison of frequent causes of death in the USA
(www.laleva.cc/petizione/english/ronlaw_eng.html).
Examining the graph, note one has .0001% chance dying from supplements and a 5.18% chance of dying from properly prescribed drugs. In other words, correctly prescribed doctor's prescriptions are 50,000 times more likely to kill you than vitamin supplements. Children’s nutrition is a lot safer sticking to vitamins than drugs, even when drugs are correctly prescribed.
From this information, it appears obvious that vitamin supplements are safe for children’s nutrition. This being the case, why do many medical doctors and pharmaceutical companies warn about their dangers, when the facts about vitamins support the opposite conclusion that doctor's correctly prescribed drugs are unsafe, in comparison to vitamins, and are the fourth leading killer in the United States after heart disease, cancer and smoking?
From a children’s nutrition perspective, the following information may prove helpful in evaluating this question.
According to Karl Loren's very credible and extensively documented web site:
- "Now I've got to the point where I think we can get
almost complete control of cardiovascular disease, heart attacks and strokes. The proper use of vitamin C and lysine can prevent cardiovascular disease and even CURE it." [Linus Pauling, 1994 Interview]
- "If you are at risk of heart disease, or if there is a
history of heart disease in your family, if your father or other members of the family died of a heart attack or stroke or whatever, or if you have a mild heart attack yourself then you had better be taking vitamin C and Lysine." [Linus Pauling, 1994 interview]
PAULING THERAPY | Agent 1 | Agent 2 | | | Vitamin C (3-6 gm) | L-Lysine (3-6 gm) |
- "The heart surgery industry is booming. According to
American Heart Association statistics, in 1995 1,460,000 angiograms (the diagnostic procedure that starts the ball rolling) were performed at an average cost of $10,880 per procedure. This resulted in 573,000 bypass surgeries at $44,820 a shot, and 419,000 angioplasties (the balloon procedure for opening up arteries) at $20,370 each. The total bill for these procedures is over $50 billion a year.
- The millions of people told that they needed immediate
surgery to save their lives actually had a 98.4% chance of surviving without surgery! [According to the CASE study published by the New England Journal of Med., 1983]
- Dr. Robert Cathcart, III, MD, reports that he hasn't
seen a single case of heart disease develop in patients who didn't already have a bad heart to begin with. Dr. Cathcart has treated over 20,000 patients with high doses of ascorbic acid vitamin C!
- During the 1970s vitamin C consumption in the U.S. rose
by 300%. Mortality from heart disease decreased by 30% in the U.S., the only country with a significant drop in heart disease fatalities. Yet, the media and organized medicine ignore these facts and disseminate misrepresentations of scientific findings regarding the benefits of vitamin C.
- Furthermore, the early findings of Canadian doctors
Patterson and Willis should not be forgotten. Their research indicated that arterial tissue levels of ascorbate (vitamin C) are much lower in heart patients when compared with controls, and that ascorbate supplementation could reduce arterial deposits. This pioneering work should have been immediately followed up.
- There is evidence that textbooks earlier this century
had much more information about the benefits of vitamin C. Most certainly the information about vitamin C and collagen production was there. Why the change? Shouldn't we have learned even more by now? If Pauling was correct about the benefits of vitamin C, then it is likely the mysterious missing infoabout vitamin C is an intentional omission and constitutesscientific fraud.
- "A study of 1,605 randomly selected men in Finland, aged
42 to 60 years, was conducted between 1984 and 1989. None of the men had evidence of preexisting heart disease. After adjusting for other confounding factors, men who were deficient in vitamin C had 3.5 times more heart attacks than men who were not deficient in vitamin C. The scientists' conclusion was, "Vitamin C deficiency, as assessed by low plasma ascorbate concentration, is a risk factor for coronary heart disease." British Medical Journal (Vol 314, Iss 708, 1997)
A great deal of research bolsters Linus Pauling's belief that vitamin C can prevent heart disease, and both vitamin C and lysine can reverse heart disease. Why is vitamin C so effective in reversing heart disease?
According to research by
Rath and Pauling
a local ascorbate (vitamin C) deficiency causes a crack to form in an artery. Then a form of low density lipoprotein, called apo(a) enters that crack and proceeds to initiate a repair process; however, this healing process is faulty and results in the accumulation of a mass of tissue that grows and can eventually clog the artery. How does vitamin C ameliorate this heart disease process? For childrens nutrition and facts about vitamins, let's count some of the many benefits of vitamin C in preventing and fighting heart disease:
- Extra vitamin C may prevent the local ascorbate
deficiency that caused the arterial crack to form in the first place.
- Vitamin C prevents endothelial cells lining arteries
from dying.
- Vitamin C increases good HDL cholesterol, which moves
fat from the arterial wall to the liver.
- Vitamin C reduces the production of LDL apo(a).
- Vitamin C prevents the decrease in arterial blood flow
caused by a high cholesterol diet.
- Vitamin C decreases the liver's production of
cholesterol and triglycerides.
- Vitamin C prevents dangerous clot formations that might
cause a sudden stroke or heart attack.
This information about the benefits of vitamin C adds to the pool of important facts about vitamins and their effectiveness.
From a children’s nutrition perspective, vitamin C appears to do all the right things in reducing heart disease. Since some studies indicate cardiovascular disease can begin in childhood, extra vitamin C might be a perfect addition to a children’s nutrition program to prevent heart disease in children.
The primary cause of cardiovascular disease is local ascorbate deficiency. The secondary causative factor is LDL apo (a). Cholesterol lowering drugs don't appear to have much effect on apo (a), except for niacin, a vitamin. Lysine along with vitamin C facilitate proper healing and repair the initial crack in the artery and causes the plaque to shrink.
If a local vitamin C deficiency caused the arterial crack, it appears obvious that increased vitamin C intake might prevent the deficiency initiating the crack and, also, decrease the apo (a) that creates the plaque. Hence, Linus Pauling's approach to curing heart disease makes sense-another one of the important facts about vitamins.
Bolstering Dr. Linus Pauling's position is a new book by Dr. Thomas Levy.
"Dr. Levy is a medical doctor and a cardiologist by training. Some time ago, Dr. Levy analyzed all 27 known cardiovascular disease risk factors. Levy discovered that they all can be reduced to a single factor- low vitamin C."-another one of the critical facts about vitamins.
It appears obvious that the pharmaceutical corporations chose to purposely attack the credibility of those supporting the benefits of vitamin C and the research upholding their support, and hid the knowledge of vitamin C's effectiveness against heart disease to prevent the tremendous financial loss they would have experienced had it become widely known to the American public.
One wonders how many children have died because pharmaceutical companies chose to hide the facts about vitamins to protect their very profitable patented drugs from competition?
From a children nutrition point of view, it is important to validate these findings of apparent wrong doing by the corporate pharmaceutical industry, in regard to vitamin C, by checking for other supporting evidence outside of the vitamin C realm. In other words, if there proves to be evidence of widespread wrong doing by Big Pharma, in general, this would support contentions that Big Pharma acted inappropriately in regard to vitamin C and support the allegation that they chose to hide the facts about vitamins to protect their profits.
Marcia Angell, a faculty member of the Harvard Medical School and a former editor of the New England Journal of Medicine, in her book, The Truth About the Drug Companies, discusses the following ways drug companies deceive Americans:
- It plies attending physicians with expense-paid junkets
to St. Croix and Key West, Fla., where they are given honoraria and consulting fees to listen to promotional presentations.
- It promotes new or little-known diseases such
as "social anxiety disorder" and "premenstrual dysphoric disorder" as a way of selling the drugs that treat them.
- It sets up phony front groups disguised as "patient
advocacy organizations."
- It hires ghostwriters to produce misleading scientific
articles and then pays academic physicians to sign on as authors.
- It sends paid lackeys and shills out onto the academic
lecture circuit to ''educate" doctors about a drug's unapproved uses.
- It hires multinational PR firms to trumpet dubious
studies as scientific breakthroughs while burying the studies that are likely to harm sales.
- It buys up the results of publicly funded research.
- It maintains a political chokehold on the American
public by donating more money to political campaigns than any other industry in the country.
Big Pharma has a well organized team of strategies to prevent the facts about vitamins from reaching the American public.
If Big Pharma's hiding the facts about vitamins isn't enough, read this:
- For many years the drug industry has reaped the highest
profit margins of any industry in America.
- In 2002, the top 10 American drug companies had profit
margins of 17 percent; Pfizer, the largest, had profit margins of 26 percent.
- In 2002 the combined profits for the top 10 drug
companies in the Fortune 500 were greater than those of all the other 490 companies combined.
- In 2003, pharmaceutical corporation and their executives were
accused of genocide and war crimes before the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
For children nutrition, who can parents trust for the facts about vitamins? Not Big Pharma. The affect on children's nutrition of such behavior is difficult to determine, but one thing is for certain, it must have taken a staggering toll over the decades, not just on children's nutrition, but on the quality of life four children and even in the death of many children. Other sources confirm this influence on children's nutrition and hiding the facts about vitamins.
From Fraud and the Pharmaceutical Industry, we find more
evidence of wrong doing by the industry in question:
- (Concerning vitamin price fixing) "On a daily basis for
the past 10 years, every American consumer paid to eat and drink or use a product whose price was artificially inflated," Reno said.
The vitamin cartel was the "most pervasive and harmful criminal antitrust conspiracy ever uncovered," said Assistant Attorney General Joel I. Klein, Reno's antitrust chief. Drug Makers To Pay Top Fine in Price Fix Chattanooga Times Free Press (Tennessee) May 21, 1999, Friday

(Then there was Pfizer).
- Pfizer is by far the largest and most powerful of the
multinational drug companies. Its wealth exceeds that of many countries. It probably exerts the greatest political influence. It was accused of influencing the Australian Minister for Health's office and undermining the activities of the PBAC, the body which controls the listing of drugs for Medicare payments and their pricing in Australia. Pfizer was in dispute over some of its drugs. Two government officials from the minister's department later joined Pfizer.
Pfizer paid out US $49 million to settle allegations of defrauding Medicaid.
- Avotek is an example of the lengths to which some drug
companies have gone to tie researchers into confidentiality agreements and so prevent publication of data which challenges the effectiveness or safety of their products. In the Olivieri case in Canada both the university and the hospital which employed Olivieri were beneficiaries of Avotek research money. When she refused to remain silent about her adverse findings she was hounded by Avotek. The university and hospital did not support her. There are other examples where researchers have been harried by corporations primarily concerned for their bottom line.
The number of illicit and immoral activities by the pharmaceutical industry are far too numerous and egregious to all name here. Yet it gives one a good idea of who not to put our trust in, regarding children’s nutrition and certainly their war, regarding the facts about vitamins is not to be trusted.
For more Big Pharma fraud information that may prove useful in your decisions, regarding children nutrition and facts about vitamins, go to: http://www.uow.edu.au/arts/sts/ bmartin/ dissent/documents/health/pharmgen.html#RESEARCH. The aforementioned page describes how pharmaceutical research has been corrupted to suit the bottom line, how doctors prescribing protocols are monitored via computers, and those doctors not prescribing "properly," according to corporate pharmaceutical standards, are pressured to conform. (I am not surprised at such behavior. Shortly after I graduated from optometry school, I began working in association with an optical corporation that attempted to pressure me into prescribing tints for spectacles when they were not needed. I reported them to my local optometric association.) You will find how Congress is controlled by pharmaceutical lobbyists, 2 lobbyists per congressman, and the money lavished upon them for their votes, not a pretty picture for the future of children’s nutrition. Finally, you will discover how the big pharmaceuticals have established front companies posing as ordinary citizens groups, but in reality acting for and paid for by Big Pharma. In the interests of facts about vitamins, it is important to note that people, like Dr. Stephen Barret, MD., have attempted to debunk Dr. Linus Pauling here: http://www.quackwatch.org/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/pauling.html
Who is Dr. Barret? He is supposedly a quackbuster that has turned out to be a rather disreputable fellow himself, according to, http://www.rense.com/general62/wbs.htm:
"The "quackbusters," we know, are a subversive operation started in the United States shortly after the American Medical Association (AMA) lost a Federal court case to the Chiropractors (Wilk v. AMA). In that case the chiropractic profession rightly, and successfully, accused the medical profession of attempting, through covert operation, to shut down, or damage the chiropractors as a competitive health profession.. They won their case - and the AMA was ordered to shut down their operation.
About six months later twenty six (26) drug companies began, and originally funded, the current "quackbuster," operation. For several years the "quackbusters," were successful.
Today, the "quackbusters," those you see, are a motley lot, led, they would have you believe, by failed MD Stephen Barrett through his boring, and repetitive, "quackwatch.com" website. "Quackwatch. com" is the quackbuster's "bible." On that site, and their dubious "web-ring" you'll find a condemnation of anything, and everything, that competes with the use of drugs, drugs, and more drugs.
Barrett, quackwatch.com, the NCAHF, Robert Baratz, and others, have all, recently, been named in a FEDERAL Racketeering (RICO) lawsuit in Colorado (CAVITAT v. Aetna Insurance). Aetna has filed four separate "Motions for Dismissal" in this case, and has been rebuffed each time. Depositions will soon begin of quackbuster leaders.
The Media - What the New York Times, and other major media are NOT YET covering, is Big Pharma's marketing "black- ops," the "quackbuster," operation. As everyone in the "health" world knows, Big Pharma's "quackbuster," operation was designed to damage, and discredit, any, and all, Natural health care methods, herbals, oxygen therapies, energy medicine, etc... - anything, and everything that competes with the use of drugs, drugs, and more drugs."
Again don't expect to get the facts about vitamins from Big Pharma, not when the facts about vitamins competes with their drugs.
For the sake of children nutrition and the facts about vitamins, it is important for parents to know about the massive attempts by the pharmaceutical industry to use doctors as fronts to ruin the reputation of vitamins and those who prescribe them. Without this knowledge, children nutrition and the facts about vitamins would be left at the mercy of Big Pharma. Without this knowledge, parents would be misled concerning children’s nutrition.
The massive attempts to damage the reputation of both Dr. Linus Pauling and the benefits of vitamin C by the pharmaceutical industry suggest they fear what might transpire if the truth about vitamin C and the facts about vitamins were publicized. For children's nutrition it suggests that vitamin C may be the most important vitamin children can take. Why otherwise would Big Pharma go to such great expense to discredit it?
Despite all the trumped up research, negative publicity about vitamin C, pressure on medical doctors to do as they are told, that has, no doubt, led to vast suffering and deaths, due to Big Pharma's misinformation campaign concerning vitamin C and other facts about vitamins, there exists on the horizon a greater danger for children's nutrition and facts about vitamins, and that is Big Pharma's control of vitamins by making all, but very low dose one a day type vitamins, prescription only.
The evidence cited above proves that the pharmaceutical industry cannot be counted upon to give parents credible information on the facts about vitamins. Since most traditional doctors are heavily influenced by the pharmaceutical industry, and are virtually forced to stick to common prescribing practices and treatments like others in their field or be faced with, not only punishment by their medical boards but increased vulnerability to lawsuits, it must be assumed that they too are not to be counted upon when it comes to the facts about vitamins.
What about the mainstream media, can parents count upon them for reliable information, concerning children’s nutrition?
According to an article in Progressive Living, due to continuing
corporate buyouts, American corporations have become interlocking centers of power, resulting in corporate influence preventing stories from reaching the American public that might adversely affect the bottom line. For example, if within these interlocking corporation centers, there exists both a media company and a pharmaceutical company, the media company could be dissuaded from announcing any stories inimical to the pharmaceutical company.
Furthermore, another story, publicized by Project Censored,
cited the following quote:
"In February 2003, a Florida Court of Appeals unanimously agreed with an assertion by FOX News that there is no rule against distorting or falsifying the news in the United States."
Hence, not only can the corporate media legally lie to the American public, but according to former CIA Director William Colby, "The Central Intelligence Agency owns everyone of any significance in the major media."
Regarding the facts about vitamins, children nutrition can count on neither the media nor the pharmaceutical industry as a truthful source of information, what about the government? To be specific, can children count on the Food & Drug Administration, the FDA, to protect them and their right to the facts about vitamins?
In 1999, the FDA lost a case where Durk Pearson, a famed scientific researcher, made four health claims for his products, regarding facts about vitamins. All claims were backed by solid scientific evidence, but still the FDA had refused to approve the claims until they lost their case in court. Based on the evidence, these products could save tens of thousands of lives. Why would the FDA not approve such products, products that would probably prove a godsend to children's nutrition?
In the article "Conflicts of interest: How Big Pharma influences the FDA's drug approval process at the expense of public safety," published on December 13, 2005 by Alexis Black, she details how large pharmaceutical corporations influence the FDA to the detriment and sometimes the death of Americans.
Another article, entitled, "Donald Rumsfeld and Aspartame,"
details how a dangerous neurotoxin, aspartame, was approved by the FDA, through Rumsfeld hiring the new head of the FDA, even though the FDA's own records indicated how dangerous Aspartame was. It's been responsible for over 10,000 complaints, 92 symptoms and death. From a children’s nutrition perspective, unfortunately, it appears parents cannot even rely on the FDA's advice, regarding the facts about vitamins.
Summary of findings, regarding children’s nutrition and the facts about vitamins:
- It's been proven beyond any reasonable doubt that
vitamins are thousands of times safer than properly prescribed doctor's medications.
- It's seems clear that the pharmaceutical industry
attempted to discredit Dr. Linus Pauling because of his belief and documented body of supporting research that indicated vitamin C, could not only prevent or cure heart disease, but be helpful in the treatment of many disorders- one of the many important facts about vitamins.
- It's, not only clear that big pharmaceutical companies
have been frequently involved in immoral, illegal and corrupt practices infecting medical doctors, researchers, universities, and even the government itself, but that with the upcoming Codex guidelines, they intend to continue with these practices, which could lead to 3 billion human deaths worldwide.
- Due to corporate influence parents cannot trust the
corporate media nor the FDA for reliable information on children nutrition and facts about vitamins.
- To the detriment of children's nutrition and health,
corporations are too focused on the bottom line to be a reliable source of information. It is likely that most people on the corporate payroll cannot be trusted as well.
Who can parents trust, regarding facts about vitamins?
- Linus Pauling can be trusted and researchers of his ilk
that stood against corporate fraud and remained uninfluenced by the corporate state.
- Medical doctors and other professionals, whom through
their own experience and research have become prescribers of vitamins and supplements, are more likely to be trustworthy, regarding facts about vitamins.
- Older research, unfortunately, not found in many
corporate controlled medical information banks is probably more trustworthy as well since it appears that the older the research, the more likely that it will not be fraudulent, regarding facts about vitamins.
- Information on the internet that is not under corporate
influence is likely to be more truthful.
- Do your own research, or hire someone to do it for you.
Your own research should turn out to be the most credible of all.
- The bad news is that, to a large extent, the media,
FDA, and the big pharmaceutical companies have been deceiving parents on the facts about vitamins. Realize that there is good news in the bad news. That is to say, inexpensive vitamins and supplements can cure and alleviate more diseases than we ever imagined.
- Linus Pauling says vitamins and supplements can defeat heart
disease, the number one killer in the US. Other credible experts claim that B-17 can prevent cancer and defeat it if taken soon enough. This is great news for children's nutrition and facts about vitamins. Why would big pharmaceuticals have tried their best to discredit Linus Pauling and vitamin research in general, if it wasn't effective?
- Bolstering the crucial important facts about vitamins in the
treatment of disease is the fact vitamins, not only have genetic influences, but they can compensate for bad genes (mutations). What's more, according to Dr. Bruce Ames, famous microbiologist at U.C. Berkeley, vitamins have already been used to treat more than 50 different genetically determined diseases.
- Now that we know vitamins and supplements are effective
in treating disease and maintaining our health, it is important to seek help in devising your children's nutrition program from credible medical doctors and other health experts who know the facts about vitamins.
- Potentially, if proper children’s nutrition changes were
made, along with sound medical advice on the facts about vitamins and other safe and effective supplements, a new era could be ushered in for mankind, an era where almost all children would be born normally, calm, with high IQs, standing and walking earlier, with superior motor coordination, more disease resistant, happier and healthier than ever before in human history, and, therefore, better able to achieve humanity's true potential.
